Little Green Pig's Newsletter December 2022
- End of Year Edition

Season's greetings Little Green Pig friends and followers,
As we look towards the end of 2022, it's a perfect time to reflect on and celebrate all that we've achieved and learnt this past year. Grab a cup of something warming and enjoy reading and listening to poetry and story extracts written by children and young people across our 5 creative writing clubs.

You can also find out ways to get involved and support our ongoing work, from signing up to train as a Story Mentor with us in the New Year to saving the date for our next Fundraiser Quiz!

Wishing you a peaceful and merry festive season with friends and family. We hope you get to curl up with a fantastic read you've been saving up to savour, or maybe pen some wintery words during the holidays! Look out for more Little Green Pig updates in the New Year.

As always, remember our values: Be Brave, Be Open, Use Your Imagination, Take Pride and Have Fun!
Thank you for your support! From Nicky, Gemma & Nikki (the Little Green Pig staff team)

Little Green Pig's young writers have been taking inspiration from lots of different things the last few months. From Black History Month and Libraries Week in October, to spooky stories and poetry inspired by the seasons and elements. There have been detective mysteries invented and surreal meals dreamt up.

Children from across our After School Clubs have entered their work into competitions including Greenpeace's environmental poetry contest and Illustoria magazine. Let's see if any of their work gets published! Here are some sneak peeks of their writing for you to enjoy...

This month, participants from Durrington High School got to see copies of their 'Transitions' magazine. Created as part of our project supporting the journey from Year 6 to Year 7, the publication celebrates what they've learnt through moving schools. Featuring 'happy hacks' for coping with worries to practical top tips and nature collage designs, copies will be given as a resource to other Year 6 children at The Laurels Primary School in Worthing.

Young writers at Longhill High School have spent Monday lunchtimes creating poetry to feature in their second zine publication. Supported by the Stephen and Laura Vakil Foundation, we returned to run six more weeks of this popular poetry club led by Roy McFarlane.  The writers aged 11 to 16 have explored themes including winter, emotions, the environment and waffles! We are looking for funding to allow another edition and more workshops!

Fancy a new challenge for the New Year?  We're looking for new Volunteer Mentors across Brighton, Eastbourne and Worthing
There's no better time to sign up to find out more about Volunteering with us than now.  We are looking for more volunteers to support our work with children and young people across Brighton and Hove, Worthing and Eastbourne. Find out more about how you can train to become one of our amazing team of Story Mentors on the website here, or get in touch with Gemma, our Volunteer Manager. Full support and training, travel expenses, and DBS checks are provided.

Volunteer mentors come from a range of different backgrounds and ages. Everyone brings their own unique skills and strengths to volunteering. One of the most key things that children and young people comment on in our work is the value of having one-to-one support from mentors. Mentors often feedback on how much they learn and gain from the experience of supporting young writers too- it's a two way learning process!
