WEEK THREE: Monday 29 April onwards

As well as carrying on with the book, the mischief around school, the stamps on children’s work, this week things amp up as THE INKLINGS ARE DISCOVERED TO HAVE TAKEN UP RESIDENCE IN THE PLAYGROUND! See below for 3 different elements this week and to then use ongoing over the next 5 weeks. Note, you can do the below in any order. The Inklings will be in residence in the playground in the tree and bug hotels from Monday 29 April morning!

1) OUTDOOR EXPLORATION - Discovering the Inklings have moved into the playground!

For all years - This week, you’ll discover during outdoor lessons/activities in the playground, including finding windows, doors and ladders in the trees.

2) MINI MUSEUM - Curiosities to inspire nature writing and exploring perspective

For all years - There’s a magical mini museum of natural curiosities inside an old print tray that you can borrow for your classroom to inspire exploration. A collection of seaweed, mini crab skeletons, seed pods, feathers, lichen and moths. This collection of natural history and objects can be used to inspire writing and exploration in your classroom this week AND ONGOING FUTURE WEEKS.

3) BESTIARY BOOK- Curiosities to inspire nature writing and exploring perspective

For Y3,4,5,6 - Teachers to suggest to look in the school library / at a selection of books from the library for clues on Inklings that you’ve gathered from library in the classroom. This doctored copy of Tolkein Bestiary has some clues - place it amongst other fantasy beasts books that there are myths and legends encyclopaedias at the school’s collection. You can see if any child finds this page under “I” in Tolkein’s Bestiary A-Z Book that we have doctored. Help them think what this antiquated language means and tells us about them. We learn Inklings are very friendly and kind creatures who love trees and stories.

The page has been torn and looks burnt so some is missing. Why might someone have torn this page out? Who? Children to be given the creative exercise of trying to write the missing page part and write their own descriptions /character profiles of both Inklings and maybe also thinking if Inklings have any enemies/allies/other creatures to write those too.
