What we offer

I. Storymaking Workshop

Length of workshop: 2h

Flexible hours to fit around the school’s schedule

Price: £270Group size: ideally between 10-20, but can go up to 30
Experience/Process: collaborating and individual writing of their own story, with professional illustrations

Outcome: each has a bound storybook with group beginning, illustrations and their own ending

Our story-making workshop is lead by an experienced writer/workshop leader accompanied by a professional artist and team of volunteer story mentors.  The workshop starts with warm-up activities in relation to story making and creativity. After this, the group work together to initiating ideas for a story plot, setting and characters as recorded by story mentor (projected on a screen).  A professional artist draws illustrations to be a part of the story for all to see. Following this, there would either be an element of improvised drama (depending on the group) or freeze-framing to generate dialogue and move the plot along to a cliff hanger/crisis point.

The next part involves young people discussing in pairs or small groups to explore where their story may go, then concludes with each child finishing their story individually.  There is also an opportunity for young people to talk and practice their illustration skills with the resident artist.  At the end of the workshop, all share and feedback on what they have learnt and enjoyed the session.

The children work on specialised story-making paper and pencils provided.  We take these away to be bound into keepsake books (including all illustrations) and return to you so they can treasure their own ‘published’ work as a souvenir of their own story writing.

II. Comic Strip Workshop

Length of workshop: 2h

Flexible hours to fit around the school’s schedule

Price: £280Group size: ideally between 10-20, but can go up to 30
Experience/Process: meeting a professional artist; using imagination to create ideas within an illustrative medium.

Outcome: all create their own comic strip they can take away as miniature concertinas

In this workshop, young participants have an opportunity to meet a professional comic book writer (we have either Western-style artists or a Japanese Manga artist) who co-leads the workshop alongside an experienced writer/workshop leader.

The workshop starts with introductions about the comic world and different forms and interests the group may have in this area.  The artist will share their journey and examples of their work.

After sketching warm-up, the illustrator will model drawing a comic strip from scratch, using 4 panels as a template.  The young people can, at this point, steer and share anything to create the collaborative group comic.

All have the opportunity after this to create their own strip with guidance and support from the facilitator, artist and team of volunteers.  At the end of the workshop, all share and feedback on what they have learnt and enjoyed from the session and can take their creations home. All materials are provided.
